My Journey to Health

February 10th, 2012
Retweet

Born on August 6, 1953, in the city of Detroit Michigan, I was almost a ten pound baby with lots of hair. I still have most of my hair today, but it’s a whole lot grayer then it was before.

I grew up in Redford Michigan, and have spent my entire life in this beautiful state. I enjoy the different seasons and the many changes in the weather. Many people don’t like our winter months here, but I probably enjoy this season most of all, because of Christmas, the outdoors, and hockey. I was introduced to hockey at a young age and I fell in love with the sport. I loved all sports, but hockey was my favorite.

Every year, we would make our outdoor rinks, or just find a pond somewhere that had frozen over, and we would play hockey all day, and well into the night. We would come home battled, bruised, and bloody, but we all had a smile on our face.

Backyard Hockey Rink

I wasn’t a very big kid so I had to rely on the one thing that I was good at, and that was my speed. I was fast, and I learned early in life, that you need to utilize your strengths, and down play your weaknesses.

I grew up, got married, had a family of my own, and thirty-five successful years, at Ford Motor Company. God has given me a wonderful wife, five beautiful children, and thirteen grand-children.

I have never been an easy learner, and life has had to take me around the block a couple of times before things finally start to sink in. Yes, I am a graduate of the school of hard knocks.

The last couple of years that I spent at Ford Motor Company, I started to put on some weight. I wasn’t playing any kind of sports, I wasn’t working out, I was eating whatever I wanted to eat, and it started to show. People that knew me started to make comments, because this was not like me. I was always fit and active, and now I was getting fat and lazy. I would always have a donut or two every morning with my coffee. It started to get a little embarrassing after a while.

The defining moments happened when my aunt came up to me at a family reunion, and told me with a loud voice, that I was fat. She said it very loudly, and anyone that was close by, heard her. Another embarrassing situation.

The next one was when my doctor sat down with me and explained that, even though I was in relatively good health, I was traveling down a path of destruction, and maybe even an early death, if I didn’t start to make some changes in my life, and make them soon.

I realized that years were starting to go by me as fast as months used to, and before I knew it, time would be nipping right at my heals. I needed to do something and I needed to act sooner rather than later.

My wife had introduced us to a diet that she was doing, and doing with a good amount of success. She lost 45 pounds on it, and I lost ten, even though I really wasn’t trying. I simply just ate the food that she put out in front of me, but one draw back to this diet, was all the preparation, measuring and weighing, that she had to go through to get dinner on the table. It was a lot of work, that she just didn’t have the time for.

Along comes Visalus Sciences, 90 Day Health Transformation. Notice I didn’t say diet because this is not a diet, it’s a transformation. As with any transformation in your life, there has to be a mindset that goes along with it. Products are products, but you are still the one that has to perform the actions.

What the 90 Day Challenge can do.

Weather your trying to quit smoking, or losing weight, you have got to wrap your mind around what you’re attempting to do, or you will fail. Having the right mindset has to be in place, to reach your goal. Simply put, success will only come when you have the want to, to succeed.

Everyone who fails, always does it at this point, and then they are always looking for excuses. The products are no good, or there’s people to blame, as to why they couldn’t lose the weight, or quit smoking. All that is, is one big fat excuse! It’s not having the real drive and mindset, that will trip  you up, not the product, or any other person.

I was done making excuses and I knew that I had to do this right now, and I was ready to wrap my whole mind, body, and soul around reaching my goal of losing 40 pounds.

I have joined the Challenge, and I have lost twenty pounds so far. I will be posting my progress as my journey continues.

Why do I love Visalus shakes?

  • It’s easy to mix a shake every morning. (Takes two minutes.)
  • It’s saves me money on my grocery bill every single week. (Each shake is under two dollars.)

  • My life transformation has begun.

In my next post, I will be talking about my routine, and what I’m doing to reach my goal of losing 40 pounds, and what I’ve done to have already dropped 20 pounds.

When We See Clearly…

January 11th, 2012

Have you ever been in a situation or a circumstance, when everybody can see what’s really going on, but you? You’re scratching your head and you’re straining to put it all together, while everyone else is giving you that look that says, “you can’t see that?’

I hate playing cards or board games, because I’m always the last one, to figure out how to play, and by the time I do, I’ve lost the game for me and anyone who’s on my team. When we see clearly and the fog is lifted, then we have that, “Oh, I get it now,” moment.

You’ve been there? You know what I mean? I’ve been there a lot in my life. It takes me a little while, but I will eventually figure it out. I’m a slow learner, but once I get it, I don’t forget it.

You don’t want to be playing this kind of game when it comes to your health though. You don’t want to figure it out when its way to late to make any significant changes.

2012 is here and over half of all Americans are over weight and obese. That maybe you and you’ve thought about taking some steps to lose some weight and get back that shape you once had, but your busy, you’re young and there is time to kill today, and you’ll get to it when the kids are older and you have more time. After all, you play tennis, you golf, go for walks once in a while, that’s exercise… right?

Wrong. If it’s not elevating your heart rate, it’s not exercise. Playing a video golf game is not exercise. Even a WI video game is not real exercise. Not the kind you would be getting if you were playing and walking nine or even eighteen holes on a real course.

I know a couple that’s in their eighties, and they will go out and play thirty-six holes and they walk…now that’s exercise.

My point is this…when we really look at a situation and see what’s really going on, see the real truth of the matter, that’s when we will get serious about doing something to change the results.

We are the worst country on God’s green earth, when it comes to eating healthy. We have a healthcare system that is getting so expensive to run, because of over weight Americans that won’t take their health seriously. We have our children that can’t walk across the street without getting out of breath, because they eat fast food and don’t exercise.

It’s time to look in the mirror America and see things the way they really are. Do you want to die at fifty years old, of a massive heart attack? Do you want to put your children through the stresses of diabetes, hyper-tension, and heart disease? Do you want to watch your grandchildren playing soccer from a wheel chair, with an oxygen tank at your side?

These and more are waiting for you in the path of life that you’re on right now, unless you start taking your health and you’re weight seriously…right now! Not tomorrow and not next week…right now!

I know that I talk about this and promote this on my blog all the time but the reason I do is because it works. I never promote something that I’ve never tried, and I will never promote anything that doesn’t work.

Obesity in America

I went to see my doctor for my yearly physical and we were just chatting, as we usually do, and he asked me if I was exercising. I said no but I was getting ready to start. I had my treadmill all set up and all I had to do is get on it and start using it. He looked at me and said, ” Brian how many times have we had this conversation?” Before I could open my mouth, he answered for me, and said, “To many times, and when are you going to get started?”

He proceeded to tell me that I was obese!

I am 5 feet 8 inches and weigh about 210 pounds. Now I know that I am not in the best of shape. I played lots of sports when I was younger and I know how to keep myself in shape and train, but to have someone tell me that I was obese, well that was going over the edge just a bit.

He told me that my ideal weight should be 160 pounds and because I was 210 pounds, that meant that I was 50 pounds over my ideal weight. Anybody who is 30 pounds or more over weight is considered obese.

I was dumb founded. I sat there and just was taking all that he was saying in and was trying to put it all into perspective. I do take a mild dose of medication for my blood pressure, but that is all.

Bottom line is… I needed to lose some weight. He told me that he would be happy if I got down to 180, which was good because the last time I weighted 160 pounds was back in high school. I would look skinny and weak if I ever got back down to that weight again. Then he told me something that I will not forget. He said, “Brian, we live in a society that has accepted our over eating habits. If all of America were to be walking around with a healthy weight we would all look skinny.” That just blew me away when he said that.

I’ll give an example of this. My brother was training for his, Homeland Security job, and I hadn’t seen him in awhile. We got together for lunch, and I thought he was sick. He looked so skinny. He told me that part of his training was to reduce the fat percentage that he carried in his body.(This is something that all of us should be concerned about.) He not only had to reduce his weight but also the fat content. He was strong, but he did not have an ounce of fat in his body. This is what my doctor meant when he said, we would all look sick because we are so used to seeing fat people walking around us.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are a fat society and we need to start paying attention to what we eat and how much exercise we get. To many kids just sit in front of their computers or their cell phones and waste the day doing meaningless things. I remember when I was a kid, my mom had to send out a search and rescue mission to get us to come home and get in the house, because we were always outside, in any kind of weather, cold, snow, rain or shine, it didn’t matter to us.

Now I’m walking my treadmill every day for thirty minutes. I feel great and my doctor said that after I lose the weight, I will probably be able to get off the blood pressure medicine.

Obesity in America is a major problem. If we can get this corrected, it will not only save lives and make us feel better, but it will reduce our countries health care costs.

Come on America! We can do this!

Attitude

I am going to ask you to do something very weird right now. First of all, I want you to listen to your thoughts. Now tell me, what thoughts fill your head? Would you label them as positive, or negative?

Now let’s say you are walking down the street with these thoughts. Do you think anyone who would meet you would be able to tell you what’s on your mind?

The answer to number one is up to you. But, the answer to number two can be pretty generic. Although people will not be able to tell you exactly what you think, they will more or less have an idea of how you are feeling.

Here’s another question. When you enter a party filled with friends, do they all fall silent as if something terrible had happened? Or does everybody there perk up as if waiting for something exciting to happen?

You know what? The answer to all these depends on your frame of mind.

Thoughts are very powerful. They affect your general attitude. The attitude you carry reflects on your appearance, too – unless, of course, you are a great actor.

And it doesn’t end there. Your attitude can also affect people around you.

The type of attitude you carry depends on you. It can be either positive or negative.

Positive thoughts have a filling effect. They are admittedly invigorating. Plus, the people around the person carrying positive thoughts are usually energized by this type of attitude. A positive attitude is very catchy.

Negative thoughts on the other hand have a sapping effect on other people. Aside from making you look gloomy and sad, negative thoughts can turn a festive gathering into a funeral wake. Think about this. Of all the characters in the “Whinnie the Pooh” movies, who would you rather want to be around. Eeyore, the negative donkey or Tigger, the positive Tiger?

"Tigger"

"Tigger"

A positive attitude attracts people, while a negative attitude repels them. People tend to shy away from those who carry a negative attitude.

We can also define attitude as the way of looking at the world. If you choose to focus on the negative things in the world, more or less you have a negative attitude brewing up. However, if you choose to focus on the positive things, you are more likely carry a positive attitude.

You have much to gain from a very positive attitude. For one, studies have shown that a positive attitude promotes better health. Those with this kind of attitude also have more friends. projecting a positive attitude also helps one to handle stress and problems better than those who have a negative attitude.

A positive attitude begins with a healthy self-image. If you will love the way you are and are satisfied, confident, and self-assured, you also make others are around feel the same way.

A negative attitude, on the other hand, has, of course, an opposite effect. So, carrying a negative attitude has a twofold drawback. You feel bad about yourself, and you make others feel the same way.

If you want to have a positive attitude, you have to feature healthy thoughts. This is probably very hard to do nowadays since, all around us, the media feeds us nothing but negative thoughts. A study shows that for every 14 things a parent says to his or her child, only one is positive. This is truly a saddening thought.

If you want a healthier outlook in life, you need to think happy thoughts, and you have to hear positive things as well. So, what can you do? Well, for starters, you could see a funny movie, you could play with children, spend some time telling jokes with friends. All these activities fill you with positive stimuli, which in turn promotes positive attitude.

Although it is impossible to keep ourselves from the negative things around us, you can still carry a positive attitude by focusing on the good things, the positive things in life.

And this positive attitude you now carry can be of benefit to other people. Sometimes when other people feel down, the thing people mostly do is try to give them advice. But sometimes, all they need is somebody to sit by them, and listen to them. If you have a positive attitude you may be able to cheer them up without even having to say anything.

If positive attitude is really great, why do people choose to adopt a negative attitude instead? One who carries a negative attitude may be actually sending a signal for attention. Before you get me wrong, feeling sad, angry, or gloomy is not wrong itself. But dwelling on these thoughts for far too long is not healthy either. There is a time to mourn.

As always, if you are beset by troubles, even in your darkest hour, focus on the good things in life, you will always have hope. Problems become something you can overcome. My mom always said, if you feel bad about your situation, you can always find somebody worse off then you.

You do not have much to lose by adopting a healthy, positive attitude. Studies show that such an attitude actually retards aging, makes you healthier, helps you develop a better stress coping mechanism, and has a very positive effect on all the people you meet every day. So, what’s not to like about a positive attitude? Adopt one today.

It can even help you in your business. I have a business called Learning MLM Secrets. It’s not easy to be positive in the economy we have right now, but as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. Try it.

Php 4:8  Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.
